Handmade from white oak using lap joints and doweled butt joints, the Serif Table combines traditional craftsmanship with modern geometry. Its sharp, angular form and serif-like legs are inspired by the structure of the Tonga stool and the language of typography.
The table extends from my 2020 design for Brand Zimbabwe, where the cultural symbolism of the stool, offering a seat as an act of welcome, shaped the brand’s identity. The sturdy 'M' in the wordmark became the starting point for the table’s form, translating an idea from cultural object to digital symbol to physical furniture.
The Serif Table reflects a dialogue between tradition and modernity, material and meaning.
